Foundational to Bitcoin self-custody.

Long before self-custody had a shelf at every conference, Vulcan21 was already building for it. Hand-engineered in Germany, their SteelQR became one of the most trusted steel backup standards in Bitcoin — a 316L stainless plate that survives fire, water, and time, encoding a seed phrase as a scannable QR — and they released the design open-source under the GPL so any sovereign individual could build on it, verify it, or make their own.

Vulcan21's founder carried that same obsession with durability into SeedHammer, contributing to the automated engraving system that reimagined multi-signature backups in steel — distributing a wallet's signing shares across plates so that any quorum of them holds both the keys and the descriptor needed to recover the funds, with nothing sensitive stored separately.

That work, and years of craftsmanship before it, helped shape how a generation of Bitcoiners think about holding their own keys. We're honored to carry it forward.
